Restaurant Reviews

Eating out… What can you say about that? If you are asking me, plenty! When I grew up eating out in a restaurant was a special treat. We would get dressed up and drive to whatever special place my parents had in store for us. Usually that meant Chinese food every Sunday; Sunday was my mother’s day of rest from the kitchen. We would drive for what seemed like hours to get to David’s Oriental in Brooklyn. Once inside it smelled so warm and inviting with exotic aromas. It was so exciting to be able to choose something from a menu, anything I wanted! For me it was always egg rolls. Oh, how I loved egg rolls – the most perfect food. I remember cutting into them and thinking it looked like a kaleidoscope of vegetables inside that crispy thin wrapper. It was a present to unwrap just for me. And, it came with a special sweet and sour dipping sauce. Perfection. I have always had a place in my life for egg rolls.

After I got married my husband Steven and I frequently ordered in our Shabbos dinner from Siegel’s Kosher Delicatessen. Their special was a whole roasted chicken, quart of soup, and two sides for $19.99. You couldn’t beat that deal. Our kitchen in Manhattan was so small you couldn’t really cook too much in it either! One day I was looking at the menu and saw they had egg rolls and added a couple to our usual order. From that night on we would have what my husband coined as “the traditional Friday night egg roll” with every Shabbos dinner.

Every time you eat out, you have the opportunity to try a new delicious food. Something that you don’t cook at home. I will be sharing those with you in this section.  Enjoy!
